UK2.net: A quick summary for people with no time (pretty much all of us)
Sadly, in a nutshell, we don’t recommend UK2.net, for a few reasons with the main ones being uptime and support. When you skim the prices and features, it all looks very attractive, but when you start to dig a bit deeper… it’s not great. Let’s run through a few of the issues.
Uptime: Lots of user reviews complain about outages. They also don’t have an uptime guarantee on their site like most other web hosts do… which is a bit odd.
Support: There are quite a few complaints about their support attitude floating around, way too many to ignore. When your site goes down (see the bad uptime above), you at least want support to get it fixed fast… this does not seem the case.
SSL: This confuses us, SSL (https) is a must these days… Google is even labelling normal http sites as visibly “not secure”, and it hurts your rankings. On top of that, you can get them for free, no idea why they don’t integrate free SSL certificates, everybody else is.
So what we’re really saying is… there are better alternatives out there. Have a look at our web hosting comparisons where we researched and analysed the top web hosts for different countries (both from a quality and cost perspective).
UK2 was founded by Ditlev Bredahl in 1998. With about 2 decades of experience in providing UK hosting services, they have registered over a million domain names. They also power thousands of websites in over 200 locations around the world.
The company is based in Shoreditch, London. Their products and services include Domain Name Registration, Email Hosting, Website Hosting, Website Builders, Dedicated Servers, and Managed Hosting, among others. They also provide SSD Virtual Private Servers and UK WordPress Hosting.
UK2 offers three types of plans for its web hosting services. These packages are named Essential Hosting, Business Hosting, and Business Cloud. The three plans can be seen below:
The cheapest plan is called Essential Hosting and costs GBP 1.00 per month due to the latest offer if you opt for a 12-month payment term. It will cost you GBP 6.95 per month if you want to pay on a monthly basis. According to UK2, the Essential Hosting plan is perfect for beginners who has a single website.
This package gives you a free domain name if you opt for at least an annual mode of payment. Plus, you get unlimited web space. Thus, you can place data-heavy videos and images in your website.
Bandwidth is also unlimited. This refers to the amount of data transferred from the hosting company’s servers to the device requesting for it. With unlimited bandwidth, you can cater to thousands (or even millions) of website viewers per day. You won’t be charged extra for periods wherein there is too much site traffic.
You get unlimited 10GB email accounts in the Essential Hosting package. With unlimited email accounts, you can create multiple addresses for different purposes. A 10GB limit per email inbox is very generous since you can create unlimited email accounts. Emails can be used on both iOS and Android devices so you don’t have to worry about opening your bulky laptop just to check your messages.
With this web hosting package, you can easily install WordPress or Drupal. The Softaculous App Installer gives you the ability to easily and quickly install a selection of hundreds of applications.
You are given one MySQL Database in the Essential Hosting package. Examples of platforms that use MySQL is WordPress and Drupal. The size of this database is unlimited giving you infinite capacity to store whatever you want, which can come in handy when creating your WordPress website.
When it comes to development, the Essential Hosting plan supports Apache, PHP, Ruby on Rails, Perl, Cron Jobs, and PHPMyAdmin. You can also use customized error messages on your websites. AW Stats is available too. The said tool can be used to get information regarding your viewers. These data include country of origin, operating system, and browser used, among others.
Finally, you are given a 30-day money-back guarantee. You can simply try out their products and services and you can cancel at any point in time with no questions asked.
Various support options are available with UK2. These are outlined below:
- Services Status Page,
- Self-Help Knowledge Base,
- Ticket Submission,
- Online Live Chat Support, and
- Telephone Support
Similar to other hosting providers, UK2’s Services Status page shows real-time information on the status of their services including Main Systems, Control Panels, and Hosting Servers. Incidents are reported in this page to keep customers informed of the current and past operations of the company.
The self-help Knowledge Base contains in-depth guides to help you navigate your way through products and services you have availed. Ticket submissions and online live chat support is available 24/7. The same goes with telephone support.
UK2’s customer support service has both positive and negative reviews. According to users, service is not consistent. Some customers even stated that they didn’t get replies through email and answers on live chat sessions weren’t able to solve their problems. Telephone support was found to be subpar as departments not in charge of a particular product don’t know where to redirect their customers.
On the other hand, positive reviews state that their support team was very helpful with some reviews even saying that they were supportive even before they made the purchase. Positive reviews also say that UK2 provided quick responses to their problems.
With mixed reviews regarding their support service, we can say that UK2 is not perfect. Only a few hosting companies get a stellar reputation when it comes to their customer support team and obviously UK2 is not one of them. The company has its peaks and troughs when it comes to providing customer support services.
There are some advantages to signing up with UK 2. Some of them are outlined below:
Free Domain Name
If you get the 12-month payment term, you can get a free domain name registration. This comes in handy if you are just starting out and haven’t purchased your own domain name yet. Saving a few pounds won’t hurt.
Unlimited Website Space
Your ten websites will be taken care of with unlimited website space. You don’t have to worry about which files to keep and which ones to move to the trash. You have unlimited website space giving you the option to host large video files and images.
30-Day Money-Back Guarantee
You can get your money back with their guarantee. If you have tried out their products and services and you think it’s not worth your time, then you can ask for a refund. It’s as simple as that.
UK2 is still a company that has imperfections. Some of them are outlined below:
Mixed Customer Support Reviews
UK2 has mixed reviews when it comes to their customer support service. Some rated them highly while others rated them poorly. If a hosting provider is not consistently living up to their promise of great support services, this is a bad sign. Having an inconsistent customer support service is one disadvantage of UK2.
This one is also based on user reviews, a lot of them complain about the uptime… and they’re not short outages either. The last thing you want is a business site to go down, you could lose a lot of leads/clients.
No Free SSL Certificate
Whyyyyyyyyyyy? Unlike other hosting companies, UK2 doesn’t provide a free SSL Certificate. If your website contains sensitive information, this security feature is a must. If you want a free SSL Certificate, you must opt for the next plan, Business Hosting. The said plan costs GBP 4.48 per month if you pay for 12 months upfront. The SSL Certificate is only given for free in the Business Hosting plan if you opt for a payment term of at least 12 months.
On the surface, UK2.net looks pretty great, but as mentioned in the summary, there are a few too many issues here to really recommend this one. Issues like an unstable uptime, no free SSL, and questionable support… instead, have a look at one of our country-specific web hosting comparisons.
