Let’s take website speed for example, did you know that a 1 second delay means page views decrease by 11%, that means over 1/10 of visitors will just turn away for every second your site is still loading… this is why a decent web host is vital!

These are our top WordPress hosting companies for Canada, true quality WP hosting that doesn’t charge you the world.

2. SiteGround

$6.99 (USD)
Disk space: 10 GB
Support: Phone, Live Chat, Tickets

SiteGround logo

SiteGround is a mammoth in the global WordPress scene, they’re one of the few hosts that are officially recommended for WordPress, by WordPress. While their servers are top notch (and global), they don’t have any in Canada unfortunately (though you could just use a CDN like CloudFlare to get around this issue). What we really like about them is their custom-built systems around speed and security. For speed, they even have a custom WordPress plugin called SuperCacher to maximize performance.

Their back-end is pretty easy to use, and they have plenty of support options if you need some help along the way (like a Knowledge Base, Tutorials, Live Chat, Phone, and Ticket Support).

They also come recommended for WordPress, by WordPress (which is pretty rare! They can, of course, tackle any CMS you throw at them).

SiteGround has 3 hosting plans, their most affordable plan starts at USD $6.99/mo (53% off the usual price)!

  • Free SSL
  • Recommended by WordPress
  • High-performance servers
  • Easily scalable

3. GreenGeeks

$2.95 (USD)
Disk space: Unlimited
Support: Phone, Live Chat, Tickets

GreenGeeks logo

GreenGeeks is another winner in our books. Not only is their performance really good in Canada as they have a data center here. They’re also super eco-friendly as they’re putting their energy consumption back 3 times into the grid through wind energy!

They also offer 24/7 support, unlimited disk space, and even have WordPress specific hosting plans. We also really like all the freebies that come with each package, like a free domain name, site migration, SSL certificates, and more.

As for speed, aside from global data centers, they also use SSD’s in combination with LiteSpeed and their custom tech called PowerCacher to maximise performance, it’s pretty impressive.

Add to that a 30-day money back guarantee if you’re not satisfied.

Their cheapest plan starts at only USD $2.95/month (down from $9.95).

They also have WordPress specific hosting plans with unlimited disk space, free WordPress transfers from old hosts, a free domain name, and 24/7 WP support. Just in case your target market is in the US, they also have 3 servers there.

They offer 3 hosting packages, their cheapest plan starts at only USD $2.96/mo (was $7.95/mo).

5. WP Engine

$35 (USD)
Disk space: Unlimited
Support: Phone, Live Chat, Tickets

WP Engine logo

WP Engine is the market leader when it comes to managed WordPress hosting (not to be confused with shared hosting that supports WordPress, which is what we’ve been talking about so far). Managed hosts are usually more expensive, because – like the name suggests – the manage a lot more than just hosting your site. Everything in their server stack is optimized for WordPress, and WordPress alone.

Their 24/7 support obviously specializes in WordPress, enabling them to fix any issue without a hitch. On top of that, they also take care of any WordPress core updates so you don’t have to worry about it. And when it’s a major update, they actually test the site first before updating to be sure nothing breaks, top notch service. They also have live real-time threat detection, actively block DDOS attacks, and they’ll even fix your site for free if it does get hacked…

All of the above more than justifies the price tag! Interested in peace of mind and can spare the budget?

Their cheapest plan starts at USD $35/month.

6. HostGator

$5.95 (USD)
Disk Space: Unlimited
Support: Phone, Live Chat, Tickets

HostGator logo

HostGator is very very old, a veteran in the hosting space, they’re actually owned by a company called EIG, who also owns a lot of other hosting brands like BlueHost. They’re ok if you live in the USA, probably not a great fit if you live in Canada but could get the job done if you want them to (maybe by using something a CDN like CloudFlare).

They have WP specific hosting plans that allow for 100k visitors on their cheapest plan. These packages are completely optimized for WordPress and it does make a difference. One of the positives of HostGator is their variety in support options, they have everything from the usual live chat, phone and support tickets, to video tutorials and a knowledge base.

  • Cheap
  • Good cost/value balance

  • No servers in Canada
  • Overall lesser quality services

7. InMotion Hosting

$7.26 (USD)
Disk space: 40 GB
Support: Phone, Live Chat, Tickets

InMotion Hosting logo

InMotion Hosting is known for business hosting solutions, they’re a step above the usual web host in terms of support and quality. They also have WordPress specific hosting plans which are a bit more expensive but offer 40GB and up to 20k monthly visitors.

However, just like HostGator, they don’t have any servers in Canada, so if you want to make use of their plans, we definitely recommend you enable a CDN to maximise speeds from Canada. We do like that, aside from the usual support options, they also have a community-based forum type section where members can answer each others’ questions. Support has always been one of their strong suits though, so you probably won’t need it.

  • High-quality services
  • Great support

8. Cloudways

$10 (USD)
Disk space: 25 GB
Support: Phone, Live Chat, Tickets

Cloudways logo

Cloudways, like the name suggests, is all about cloud hosting. They use other providers’ data centers, and enable you to deploy and manage apps on them. Their partners include Linode, Amazon AWS, Vultr, Digital Ocean, Stackpatch and the Google Cloud Platform.

While not WordPress specific, CloudWays does offer some WP exclusive features like a custom caching plugin and very well-optimized server stacks. One of their partners also has a server in Canada, so speed won’t be an issue.

The awesome thing about Cloudways is their scalability, it’s very seamless. They do things a bit differently compared to your usual hosting provider, so there’s a small learning curve there… but it’s worth it. Also, their support is top notch and very responsive.

  • Super scalable
  • Multiple providers

  • A tad more expensive

9. Dreamhost

$2.59 (USD)
Disk space: Unlimited
Support: Phone, Live Chat, Tickets

DreamHost logo

DreamHost would be another great option if you were living in the USA (but again, you can enable a CDN and still use them if you want). They’ve been around for ages and have a great reputation, both for their quality of services and their support (which they don’t outsource).

They have multiple WordPress specific plans, from shared hosting plans to managed WP plans that they call DreamPress. Both types work, but DreamPress takes the cake with a few extra WP features. Their basic WordPress plan includes unlimited disk space, SSD hosting, and even a 97-day money-back guarantee.

  • In-house support

  • No servers in Canada

10. Bluehost

$3.95 (USD)
Disk space: 50 GB
Support: Phone, Live Chat, Tickets

Bluehost logo

While BlueHost hasn’t had a great run since EIG bought them, they’ve slowly redeemed themselves with better support and decent WordPress focused plans that offer increased performance.

Their WP plans include auto WordPress updates, a handy staging environment, and instant WordPress install when you sign up to one of their plans. They also offer 24/7 support with a variety of options there. And they have a 30-day money-back guarantee if you’re not happy with their services

Canadian web hosting phone

When you’re just starting out and maybe are looking to build a website from scratch, a lot of people look for a Canadian web host that is inexpensive and gets the job done, yet isn’t too complicated so that they can manage it without additional help. If you’re not planning to start a very custom and complex web app or platform, but rather your usual business site, blog, e-commerce store, etc… As far as CMSs go, WordPress is the way to go.

It’s simple to start up, and free to use, though a lot of people may not know whether the website they are trying to build, warrants the use of Managed WordPress Hosting (the expensive kind), or the more general shared hosting that supports WordPress (what we usually recommend). So in this article, we aim to explain WordPress and WordPress Hosting, and show what to look for in the best WordPress hosts Canada has to offer. That being said, if you’re in another country, we also have the following top WP hosting comparisons. best WordPress hosts Australia and best UK WordPress hosting.

WordPress Explained

WordPress is a CMS (at the moment powering over 25% of the entire internet) that you can install on the majority of web hosts. Most WordPress Hosts offer 1-click installation of the software. And like most open-source software, WordPress is free for the general population, yay. It is generally the go-to site building platform for small to medium-sized business sites, blogs, e-commerce stores, and even forums, because it’s so easy to use and build/design websites with.

What is WordPress Hosting?

WordPress Hosting is a term used to describe any web hosting provider that supports WordPress. Different web hosts may offer different hosting types of course, from shared, to a vps, dedicated hosting, and cloud hosting. It all depends on the level of expertise and specific needs the person has in regards to setting up their site.

When opting for a WordPress host, the most commonly used is shared hosting (or cheap WordPress hosting :)). This type of hosting allows different websites to share a single server which cuts back on the cost tremendously. Though there are some drawbacks to this kind of hosting, it is still in the majority when it comes to how WordPress users store their site information.

Cheap WordPress Hosting – Pros and Cons

  • Easy to install and user-friendly
  • Inexpensive
  • Many hosts offer unlimited domains, emails, site traffic, and storage
  • More customizable

  • There might be a ceiling to the unlimited WordPress Hosting features
  • Resources are shared with other websites
  • Other sites on the server can slow your website down

Features to look for in Canadian WordPress hosts

website creationNow that we understand, what WordPress is and how it works, we can see just what makes some of the top WordPress hosts stand out from the others.

There are a plethora of WordPress hosting companies available on the web.  Many of them offer features that you may need and require, some that you don’t need, and some that could adversely affect your website and how you’re able to build it.

It’s important to narrow down the list to a few important features so that it’s easy to spot which hosts are good and which hosts aren’t worth your time. So, here are some of the features you want to look for in the best WordPress Hosts:

Domain Hosting

Generally, when you’re choosing a WordPress host you want to find one that can also register domain names. That way, your hosting + domain are with the same company, makes support a lot easier.

Blog Hosting

Many of the people looking into WordPress hosts, gravitate towards it for their blog features, so it goes to reason that the best WordPress hosts will have features that make it easy for bloggers to download and start using WordPress without delay.

So, web hosting providers should really a  have a 1-click installation option for WordPress.

Email Accounts

With a customized domain, comes the need for a personal email. The top WordPress email hosts will permit an unlimited amount of email accounts so that you and your entire team can engage in communication using customized domain names.

You can set up these email accounts through the control panel of your computer, and be able to link them to business apps.

Bandwidth and Disk Space

Another feature to look for in your WordPress host is unlimited features such as email, storage, domains, bandwidth, and so on. Though some hosts boast about these unlimited features, there may actually be a ceiling to these features that could affect the way your website operates.

So, the most dependable hosts will warn you when you are reaching your limits and open up a dialogue on scaling options. This is especially true is terms of storage for your website and bandwidth which can be used up fairly easily unless you understand your options and your limits.

WordPress Hosting Security

SSL sertificatesWhen you create a website, you want it to be secure, so that’s why you want a host that can give you the peace of mind that you hope for when you launch your website so you know that no one can alter your content or affect your site in any way without your permission.

So, you’ll want a host that offers some general securities like software updates, monitoring, SSL certificates for free, DDoS protection, among other basic security tactics. But at the very least a host should be able to keep your WordPress software up to date.

Hosting Speed

The fastest WordPress hosting companies use a CDN (like those offering managed WordPress hosting), which allows content from your website to be delivered to the site visitors computer from the closest server to their location.

This results in shorter load times and makes for a better overall experience for the visitor. It’s an extremely important feature especially if you’re running an eCommerce website.

It will keep your potential customers from leaving in frustration and may even boost revenue.

Server Location

While server location is important, it’s not as important as it used to be. If you’re using a CDN like CloudFlare, the location of your data center doesn’t have to be a big factor. It is however still ideal to have a data center in Canada if that’s where your target market is.

Server Uptime

There are times when a server will go time. That’s just the nature of technology. However, what you want to avoid is a host that has low server uptimes, because your site visitors may have a hard time interacting with your site when it’s not there.

So, what you want to look for in a WordPress host, is one with an uptime of 99.9% so that the chances any site visitor finding your website down is slim.

Customer Support

support optionsThis isn’t something that is top of the list when choosing a host, but it could mean all the difference if you aren’t skilled with website building and you’re suddenly experiencing an issue with your website.

Being able to contact someone about it could help you understand what’s happening with the server your website is based on, or help you solve an issue that is appearing on your end.

System Backups

Because Servers can crash and accidents happen, it’s important to know if your host is able to back up your email, database, and website. Because if tragedy does strike, you will be able to get your site back up and running sooner if the worst occurs.

So, you want to check if your host has automatic monthly, weekly, or daily backups.
