Introduction

There are a whole bunch of similarities between HostGator and InMotion Hosting. For starters, they are two of the oldest web hosting providers in the industry. As established names, they are also among the largest companies, too.

InMotion Hosting opened its doors in 2001 in Los Angeles with only a single office, server, and router. Between its co-founders, Todd Robinson, and Sunil Saxena, the company has transformed from a web hosting provider into a powerhouse that now services 300,000 plus domains. Today, they have successfully distinguished themselves as a leader in high-speed SSDs and reliable customer support.

HostGator started on the opposite coast, but with the same humble beginnings. Born in the dorm room of Florida Atlantic University student Brent Oxley, HostGator established itself as one of the fastest-growing companies in the country few short years later. Currently, Endurance International Group owns HostGator as it provides a service to more than eight million domains.

When there are so many similarities between InMotion Hosting and HostGator, it may be challenging to settle on which web host to choose. That’s why we have analyzed the two on your behalf, evaluating each company on four different factors, including pricing, support, performance/speed, and ease of use. That way, you can measure the strengths and weaknesses of each provider and decide which host can maximize your websites’ potential.

Pricing – HostGator Wins

InMotion Hosting users have three options when it comes to shared hosting plans: Launch, Power, and Pro. The Launch plan is their introductory option and starts at $3.99 per month if you purchase their two-year subscription. That includes two support websites, a free domain, unlimited disk space, email accounts, and a free SSL certificate.

The Power and Pro plans expand on these features and can be purchased for $5.99 and $13.99 per month, respectively. The Power plan offers 50 MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, as opposed to only two included in Launch, and Power also adds four more websites and e-commerce readiness. The Pro plan gives users unlimited databases websites and pro-level support.

The Hatchling Plan, the Baby Plan, and the Business Plan are the three shared hosting options for HostGator users. Each plan comes with unlimited FTP users, MySQL databases, unmetered bandwidth, and free migrations. Plans also cost $2.75, $3.95, and $5.95 per month, respectively.

The Hatchling and Baby Plans are relatively similar as they both offer one-click installs and unlimited email. The one difference is that the Baby Plan has unlimited domains, unlike Hatchling. The Business Plan adds to the feature portfolio with private SSL, dedicated IP, and free VoIP phone service.

Support – InMotion Hosting Wins

If you have an issue with your website, you can rest assured that it will be resolved if you are an InMotion Hosting customer. Their thorough and pleasant customer support team is available around the clock to provide help through chat, tickets, Skype, and phone. They can even assist people with free site transfers.

Customer reviews back up the positive experiences. Customers note typically pleasant interactions with the technical support team.

HostGator has a robust customer support team, too, which lets people get in touch via a knowledge base, phone, email, and live chat. If you opt for the live chat support, you can be speaking with a HostGator representative in a matter of seconds. They also assist people with a free site and cPanel migrations.

Despite the comprehensive support, one of the consistent comments was that resolving problems took longer than expected.

Speed – It’s a Tie

InMotion Hosting has consistently been one of the faster web-hosting providers. Their average page-loading times are around 850ms. As a point of reference, the industry average is 890ms.

InMotion also follows through with a respectable uptime of 99.95%. A 99.95% uptime equates to 5 minutes of downtime per week, or roughly 4.5 hours over a year.

HostGator lags when it comes to page loading speed with an average rate of around 1000ms. If there is one Achilles heel to their service, this is it. While their servers, which are spread across Utah and Texas, provide reliable uptime, they are demonstrably slower than most web hosting providers.

That said, HostGator has excellent uptime. They average 99.98% uptime, and in 2018, managed to meet or better that mark for a nine-month streak. HostGator even provides an uptime guarantee, which credits users for downtime that happens under 99.9 percent.

While both hosts would work if you were searching for web hosting services for Canada, neither we think would work if you were looking for web hosting in Singapore, or Australia web hosting for example.

Ease of Use – It’s a Tie

A web host can have all the cool features they want, but that power is useless if their design is not accessible. Having a clear and navigable interface will make designing the website that much easier for users. For instance, InMotion Hosting and HostGator both use cPanel control panels, which make site management a snap.

InMotion Hosting provides all the major content management systems, including WordPress, Joomla, and more. They also have Softaculous, which lets people install over three hundred applications with just a single click. InMotion Hosting has managed to differentiate itself from the competition with a set of robust e-commerce relationships and a Smartwall Threat Defense System.

HostGator makes life simple when it comes to designing a successful website. With 75 supported applications and a full slate of CMS offerings, users can customize existing templates to their desired look and feel relatively easily. HostGator also has e-commerce plans, additional site security features, and hundreds of interesting tutorials on their website.

Conclusion – HostGator Wins

Let’s review before we reveal our top choice. InMotion Hosting offers blazing page speeds and robust customer support, though its uptime rates are tedious at best. HostGator provides a competitive all-around package with a diverse range of products and services as well as consistent uptime. HostGator lacks in the zippy page loading department, however.

When it comes to picking a champion, we have to give the edge to HostGator. Despite their size, they have not rested on their laurels in this industry. Beginner and veteran users alike will be able to find everything they need with HostGator, including reliable uptime and excellent customer support.
